Our Story
Rafiki was founded by a South African team living in the UK, working inside global companies while staying closely connected to African talent. We believed we could, and should, play a role in supporting both the African diaspora and talent building from within the continent.
Rafiki is backed by leading African accelerators and is part of the Jobtech Alliance, reflecting our commitment to long-term, sustainable job creation across the continent.
Built by operators who have run flexible teams themselves, Rafiki also developed a standalone project, invoicing, and payments orchestration platform, Petl, to solve real coordination and payment challenges.
It supports fast, affordable domestic and cross-border payments using regulated fiat and stablecoin rails, and continues to power Rafiki internally.
Rafiki exists for a future where teams are modular, collaborative, and formed around work, not contracts.

Why "Rafiki"?
If you've ever watched The Lion King (who hasn't?), you'll undoubtedly remember Rafiki, the charismatic and somewhat eccentric confidant to the king of the Pride Lands, Mufasa.Rafiki uses his wisdom to guide those around him and nurtures the next generation along their path from adolescence into leadership.
Similarly, we exist to support the next generation of independent talent.
The word "Rafiki" translates as "friend.
